Don’t Let a Flat Tire Ruin Your Labor Day Road Trip

Planning a road trip for the Labor Day weekend? Make sure your vehicle is ready to roll before you hit the highway.

The Labor Day holiday is one of the busiest times for summer travel, with millions of Americans taking to the roads to visit family, enjoy fireworks, or escape for a long weekend. But with higher temperatures, heavy traffic, and longer drive times, your tires and vehicle will be under extra stress. The last thing anyone wants is a breakdown on the side of the road when they should be celebrating.

Van with People on a Road Trip

If you plan on hitting the road, here’s how to make sure your car is as ready for the trip.

Tire Safety Checklist

Before you leave the driveway, take a few minutes to inspect your tires:

  • Check tire pressure – Heat and driving can cause pressure fluctuations. Be sure tires are properly inflated according to your vehicle’s guidelines.

  • Inspect tread depth – Worn-out tires have less grip and can become dangerous in sudden braking or summer storms.

  • Look for damage – Cracks, bulges, and visible wear on the sidewalls or tread are signs it’s time for replacement.

  • Check your spare – If you get a flat, you’ll be glad you did!

Other Must-Do Maintenance Before You Hit the Road

Your tires aren’t the only part of your vehicle working overtime this holiday:

  • Top off fluids – Coolant, oil, brake, and windshield washer fluid should all be at proper levels.

  • Test your battery – Heat can speed up battery failure. Don’t get stranded.

  • Make sure your brakes are ready – Squeaking, vibration, or soft pedal feel? Get it checked.

  • Keep your cool – A functioning A/C system is a must in July.

Have fun and stay safe this Labor Day weekend!
